The Way Ahead

46 questionnaire responses have been received. The proposal to offer a 2nd service gained the support (though not the pledged attendance) of just less than 2/3 of the returned surveys. Over half the surveyed group would like to attend such a service at some time (25 would like to attend a different service on different weeks). Over a third of the surveyed group say they would bring guests to such a service (16,18,15 at different points). These results indicate that a good number of our congregation want to encourage the idea, and indicate that their non church-going friends could find it attractive.
However there is no consensus over the timing of such a service. The only timing on Sunday which received significant support (1/3) was for an early 9h30 start, which will not be possible in our current building, given that it would overlap with both the ERF & RC services. Only Sunday evening received significant support as an alternative day/time, but there was a wide variety of times suggested from 17h00 to 20h00. We believe that the logistical problems presented outweigh the support indicated, especially since we anticipate that many of those coming to such a service will have children for whom such timing will be very difficult.
We conclude that it would be premature at present therefore to try to launch a 2nd service in addition to our current Sunday morning services. We agreed that the core objectives remain, and that, given the positive response to the idea of such a service, we should seek another way forward.

We propose that the way forward is to ask the Church Council to agree to each of the following:

A - Encourage and challenge everyone to continued prayer about this issue, especially about the ways we reach those who are not attenders at our Church, and that God should provide us with people who have a gift for evangelism.

B - Modify the current 3rd Sunday "Morning Worship" service to reflect the contemporary service proposals.

C - Change the current 1st Sunday "Family Worship" service, so that younger children have separate activities for some or all of the service time, and the service itself reflects the contemporary service proposals.

D - Switch the order of the services in each month, so that the above two services would run on consecutive Sundays (for example, 1st and 2nd Sundays, or 3rd and 4th Sundays). This would allow better continuity between them, especially with the "contemporary services" being to be theme-based.

E - Make a concerted effort, across all of our services, to make small but meaningful adjustments to better accommodate the "unchurched" and "Pre-Christians" so as to be more effective in reaching them with the life-changing message of the Gospel.

  1. Convene a group of Church members to review the above, so as to see what needs doing here

  2. Explain to all Church members the need for the above to cultivate a "visitor friendly" outlook.

  3. Recognise better the situation of those unfamiliar with written liturgy and "Church language"
    1. Assume Sunday morning services are targeted toward less experienced or less church-educated people, and that real growth for more mature Christians takes place in Bible study groups and other deliberately growth-oriented activities
    2. Provide at all services explanations of why we are doing what we do, and instructions (e.g., when to stand; responses after reading; meanings of unfamiliar terms).
    3. Explain the significance and meaning of potentially unfamiliar words/expressions and liturgy.

  4. Teaching material at all services needs to be reviewed to ensure it is relevant and applicable:
    1. Messages should be challenging and clearly/directly actionable.
    2. Handouts to accompany sermons, with action points, etc. should be used more by those speaking.
    3. The offer of support & the need to help attendees to open their lives to a personal relationship with God all need to be to the fore in this review.
    4. The need to develop themes over several weeks should be discussed.
    5. The challenge of Jesus must in no way be minimised, and secular self-help technique style answers are to be rejected.

  5. Better connections need to be made between the different elements of services (e.g. readings, message, music, prayers), so all is complementary rather than being separate unrelated elements.

  6. Seating arrangements must be reviewed to deal with rising numbers, and in the long run alternative venues may need to be considered. (We must bear in mind that research suggests new people do not join Churches which have reached 80% of their seating capacity!)
