Church Council - Chaplain’s review of past & future issues April 2005

1. Chairing of meetings - it has sometimes been felt that we should invite different members to chair the meetings from month to month, rather than the Chaplain always doing so. Should we do so this year?

2. Is it helpful to have provisional timings appended to agenda items to encourage us to get through the business?

3. Members have been encouraged in the past to join Council Committees, overseeing areas such as Evangelism, Events, Music, Social/Catering, Finance, Building, onto which other Church members have been invited. This spreads involvement. Do we pursue this?

4. We did try once improving Pastoral Care of members of the Church by asking Councillors to each take responsibility for making contact with a dozen members/families monthly to see if they needed help or support in any way, and to see if they had issues that should be addressed, etc. This didn’t work out well. Is it worth retrying?

5. We have the goal of giving away outside our own Church 10% of last year’s income. We have tried to limit the number of groups supported so they get bigger sums. Whom shall we support this year? How can we increase interest in & support of such endeavours? How should the “Lewis project” relate to this?

6. We have prayed for a project or two to support and galvanise Church concern. On the horizon are: the Lewis family’s mission call; the Diehls coming to Grenoble; the International Student Worker. Are there other projects to consider?

7. Youth & children’s work have been identified as key aspects of Church life, which we should better resource. How can we best do this? (Small chairs for children has not been followed up.)

8. Equipping Church members to have a deeper relationship with God & other people, and to be able to witness to & share their faith, were seen by the last Council as our other main priority. How can we helpfully do this?

9. How can we encourage more people to join (& form) home groups to aid growth & outreach?

10. The report “Mission Shaped Church” challenges us to think more radically about different ways of being Church, which might better connect with the unchurched. How do we respond?

11. How do we make prayer a more significant part of Church life?

12. With rising numbers at Sunday services (thank God) we looked at starting a 2nd service, but found no suitable time and arrangement. It also raised fears of the church splitting. How should we proceed?

13. Our finances have been good of late, but how do we encourage more people to give aright rather than relying on a limited number to give large sums?

14. Jim & Reagan Brown are willing to pursue the idea of a photograph Church directory to be displayed in the building on Sundays to help people identify one another.

15. The issue of defining our Church’s beliefs more closely has been discussed, particularly with regard to those helping with children’s work. A draft statement needs our decision.

16. We have supported the ICS Morzine seasonal ministry. Will we continue to do so?

17. A monthly (?) “Welcome to St Marc’s” meeting has been suggested, to orientate newcomers.

18. Community Centre idea is to be worked on by a small group.

19. Microwave, tables, notice boards, location of the “Anglican office” in the centre, cleaning of “petit volume” are amongst practical issues awaiting resolution.
