What Christmas says to the current Economic & Environmental Crises by Stephen Coffin

The current economic crisis underlines the fragility of wealth, as Paul warned Timothy (1 Timothy 6v17-19.
What does the Christmas message have to say to us today?
God loves planet earth
In Jesus God become a human and chose to live on earth?
We must look after this world – this is more important than money & material wealth
The financial crisis is an opportunity to refocus on sustainable development

  • Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. (1 Timothy 6v17)
Jesus came to give himself for us
We must look for ways in which to give to others, rather than get for ourselves
  • Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. (1 Timothy 6v18)
Aim to give more than to get
Invest in people not things
  • In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. (1 Timothy 6v19)
Be willing to take a cut in material wealth, following Jesus' example
  • You know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich. (2 Corinthians 8:9)
Ask yourself who can you enrich?
Christmas says God loves us so much he’s willing to make sacrifices for us
We must accept his love by a personal response
A change of life & behaviour which shows in love for God & our neighbour
God awaits our response!
To turn from wrong (repent).
To accept Jesus, God's gift, as Saviour & Lord, and follow him.
To allow the Spirit of Jesus to inspire our daily living in love.
To follow Jesus' example of care for others, especially those in need.
The Church is here to help us in this.
