As a consequence of Easter Jesus calls us to Love One Another John 13v31-35 by Stephen Coffin

Here are some famous last words

  • I’m bored with it all. (Winston Churchill)
  • They couldn’t hit an elephant at this distance. (John Sedgwick, before he was shot in the American Civil War)
  • How were the receipts today at Madison Square Garden? (P.T.Barnum)
  • Am I dying or is this my birthday? (Lady Nancy Astor, seeing all her family)
  • Either that wallpaper goes or I do. (Oscar Wilde)
  • Adieu, mes amis. Je vais à la gloire. (Isadora Duncan)
  • Tirez le rideau, la farce est terminée ! (Rabelais)
  • Enfin, on va maintenant jouer ma musique ! (Hector Berlioz)
  • Enlevez-moi ça ! (Clemenceau, en voyant arriver un prêtre)
  • Allons! Il est temps que je désemplisse le monde ! (Victor Hugo)

Jesus’ last words are recorded in John’s Gospel.

He says a lot, but a key statement is this:
A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. (John 13v34)
One of Jesus’ last wishes was that his followers should love each other.
In case we don’t understand what that means he invites us to follow his own example.

In what ways did Jesus show love to his disciples?

  • He gave them time
  • He listened to them
  • He shared with them what was on his heart
  • He helped them practically
  • He fed them
  • He prayed for them
  • He corrected and forgave them
  • ………

Do we realise that Jesus still loves us in these ways?
Do we love each other like this?
Do others see such love amongst us?
Jesus is alive to inspire such love in us – we need to open our lives to his love, so it fills us and can flow from us to others, including to one another.
Our Church logo seeks to express that (see our web site front page).
