The Passwords

The current plan is to have two passwords: one for the general church congregation and the other for site administration.

Site Administration Password

First, if you are a site admin, don't give out the site admin password. There is good reason to keep the group of people who can administer the site small. If the group of people with the password grows, trying to figure out what is going on is going to get unworkable.

Congregation Password

This is used by everyone who want's to contribute to the website content. It allows people to create and edit pages as well as upload files (photo's, music, etc.). Well probably want to rotate this every six months to a year to prevent it getting too widely distributed.

Maintaining Passwords

There are two basic ways to manage passwords: through the conf.php wiki configuration file (see PmWiki:InitialSetupTasks) and through the GroupAttribute pages for each group. I'm not going to cover the maintenance of the general password, that's already covered in the PmWiki:PmWiki documentation pretty well.

Using the admin password, you can change the following kinds of passwords for each group using the group's GroupAttribute page:

  • Read -- add or change a password for reading. Currently the only group that has a read password is Joyful Noise Media. It's there to protect access to MP3s basically.
  • Write -- change the password for writing. Currently there is a default write password for the entire site. The Sand Box section is an exception. The special password "nopass" was set there to allow general write access to encourage people to try-out the edit process. You can create a new write password for a group, by setting a password in this field. To be honest, at this point, I don't see why this would be a good idea.
  • Upload -- change the password for upload. Currently there is a default upload password for the entire site. You can create a new upload password for a group, by setting a password in this field. To be honest, at this point, I don't see why this would be a good idea.
  • Attributes -- change the password for changing the passwords. Be careful here! If there are different passwords for these pages, it could get pretty confusing. It's probably a good ideal to consult with one of the other admins before changing this stuff.

Group Attribute Page Links

For convenience, below is a list of links to the attribute pages of the current groups. You can always access the attribute page by accessing the GroupAttribute page of a group and adding ?action=attr to the end of the URL in the location field of your browser.
