Stephen Coffin is the Chaplain of our Church. Born in 1952, he went to school in Dulwich, south of London, and then studied French & German at Oxford University. He then married Marian, whom he has known since they were seven, and trained as a clergyman at Trinity College Bristol, when Alec Motyer & Jim Packer were on the staff. Ordained in 1977, he served as assistant curate in two Church of England parishes in Cornwall, where his two daughters were born. From 1982 the family spent 3 years with Mid Africa Ministry (part of the Church Missionary Society) in Burundi, central Africa, followed by a year worshipping at a house church in Slough, near London. They then spent 14 years back in Cornwall, where Stephen was Vicar of four rural Churches near Plymouth, including Cornwall's former cathedral at St Germans. He was appointed Chaplain of Grenoble in November 2000. Stephen's hobbies are reading (especially science fiction & fantasy), skiing, walking, and appreciating music & impressionist art. He & Marian are spending most of their "spare" time renovating an old house in Savoie. His preferred Christian writer is C.S.Lewis. Marian trained as a nurse & midwife, teaches in ourChurch's Sunday School, plays piano some weeks, and helps run the communion choir. She has had experience of teaching her own children at home from their time in Africa. |
